After his operation, Scout returned to the vet for a check-up. The cone was part of his recovery; the commentary is entirely his own imagined account.

Scout: ‘Back for a check-up. I’ve counted everything. We’re still two short.’
The case history
Scout: ‘He has photos, notes and follow-up questions. I was going to mention it was a bit itchy.’
A new market
Scout: ‘They’ve a whole range for neutered dogs. I lose two things and gain a loyalty scheme.’
The cone
Scout: ‘Can’t lick a stitch. Can hear a biscuit packet opening three rooms away.’
A second opinion
Scout: ‘If you’re handing out cones, give Barry one. Might keep him off the bloody phone.’
The important bit
Scout: ‘He worries because he cares. I lean against his leg. Seems to settle him.’
